Get ready for New Year's Eve

New Year's Eve - I love it!
For me it's about spending time with friends, celebrating the past year and welcoming in the next.  For me it also about the outfit.  I like to look good on New Year's Eve - I think it because I want to start the year looking fabulous!

Now it's not about buying something new (although it's lovely to have the excuse!)  But it's about pampering yourself, getting your hair right, doing your nails, pulling together the right accessories...don't forget  "When accessorizing always take off the last thing you put on" as quoted by Coco Chanel.

Looking good, makes you feel great, feeling great makes you smile - when you smile everyone else around you smiles too!  Now if you are unsure what you want to wear, I've checked out some lovely outfits for you, not forgetting the ones from The party season has started! earlier this month:

If you don't fancy wearing a dress, why not try a jumpsuit - there are lots to choose from on the high street, here is one I really like from Wallis at £60

I'm loving this Sumba frill dress from Ted Baker although your budget may not like the price tag at £129

Here's a fabulous little pink number from Dorothy Perkins at only £39

And for you Cougar ladies I have two lovely options:

Phase Eight has this fabulous dress Purnella which was £130 and now is £99

M&S has this classic lacy number with 3/4 sleeves at only £49.50

Have a fabulous time and Happy New Year!

All the best for 2012

Essential kit - James Brown London Dry Shampoo

I discovered James Brown London hair products a couple of years ago.   An intensive mask conditioner was being given away with one of my monthly magazine.  Kate Moss was recommending it and so I thought if its good enough for Kate then I shall give it a go!

So impressed was I with the results, I checked out what other products were available, the only place I could find stocking his range was Boots Chemist.  There is not a vast amount of products in the range but what products there are all work - exactly as it says on the bottle!

I use a lot of the products, but the one I always ensure I pack is the reviving dry shampoo.  If you have never used dry shampoo this stuff can get you out of serious "lack of time to do hair" situations!!

Simply shake, lift hair section, spray under hair direct onto the roots and repeat.   But don't do it all over - stick to the crown. Wait a few minutes and then brush out, and I mean brush! If not you will be left with white hair and if you are a brunette like me, it just looks grey!  It won't feel clean - but it will look like you have just done your hair - for us time poor people, every little bit helps!

Another trick is, if you want to wear your hair up, but your hair is too squeaky clean to do so, then put some of this in to add some texture and you find that it will help with keeping it all in place.

Top tip - James Brown London normally forms part of the Boots gift range and after Christmas we all know that Boots put their gift sets at half price - so if you want to try his hair products go and have a look now!!!

'Tis the eve of Christmas

Hopefully by now all the Christmas shopping has been bought, wrapped and put under the relevant Christmas tree.  Food shopping with all the extra trimmings sorted & waiting to be stuffed!  Or if you have treated yourself to eating out then you've had a lucky escape this year at the supermarkets (well done you!)

Nows the time to sit back & relax with that glass of wine and enjoy the festive holidays - no more can be done, no more can be bought - so enjoy!

If you are the one cooking tomorrow don't stress whatever time it's ready is when they will eat - I find a slurp or two of wine usually helps the cooking along!  If you are not cooking (and here's hoping I'm one of them) then at least offer to do the washing up - fingers cross they have a dish washer!!

Merry Christmas everyone, have a fabulous festive holiday

The Gold Rush!

This season Gold is very much everywhere.   What I'm loving most is that it can be worn as day wear  and not having to save it just for those party nights out!

In my November top picks my gold cardigan from Mango has been worn with some of my favourite party dresses or worn during the day with my dark denim teamed up with a long gold necklace.

Adding some sparkle to your everyday outfit is a great way of making sure you look fabulous. Gold can be hard to wear for some skin tones, so if you don't think you can get away with gold clothing then opt for accessorising!  Add some sparkle to your day, by checking out the following:

Motel Gabby Dress Sequins
ASOS - £58.00

Metal Cube Skinny Belt
Wear it with denim or wear it to the office around an everyday black dress
Warehouse - £20.00

Untold Box Clutch
I've been using my gold clutch with every evening outfit - I'm loving this one & the reduced price!
House of Fraser - was £125 now £62.50

Chanel Nail Varnish
Peridot 531

And finally, something that you won't just find on any high street - this fabulous cuff is from a UK designer, Alice Menter.  Inspired by Northern Thailand she creates beautiful jewellery.

Isla is £175.00 - but I've calculated the value of purchase to be £7.29 if you wore it twice a month for a whole year!

Sometimes it's worth travelling the extra mile

Are you bored with always shopping at the same place?

Between now and the new year it's likely you will be hitting the shops - be it to finish off Christmas shopping or for the sales in-between the holidays.  Why not try somewhere new?

I know there has been a lot of hype in the news that the high streets are dying, but there are some high streets that quite frankly are little gems - if you are prepared to travel!

I believe a good high street should offer a good choice of typical branded shops with smaller independents mixed in and to top it off - a nice selection of cafes that you can spend some time watching the world go by!

Some of my favourite places are; Brighton, Cheltenham, Marlborough & Cambridge.  Each of these places offer all the above - a throughly enjoyable day out, shopping in a great environment which makes a change to the typical "shopping centre" where everything all starts to look the same within a couple of hours!

You might have to pay a little more for parking & for those that only shop in centres,,,,you might have to wear a coat!

But they say change is as good as a rest!

This week Mary Portas has published her independent review commissioned by the Government.  The report looks at what's needed to put some life back into our high streets.  If you are interested to read the full review or her 28 summary recommendations then click through to The Portas Review

The glamourous updo!

Lots of parties this year are themed around black tie - there is nothing more glamorous than a gorgeous updo hairstyle for the ladies.

Clearly this will only work if you have mid-long length hair - and with the high-street full of different hair extensions that you can colour-match there is no reason why you can't simply put it up!

I say that - but it's not really that easy...when i got married, my wedding dress called for an updo, in my search I actually found many hairdressers do not offer this service!  It's a shame because is a great talent to have.  If you are a hairdresser reading this - please learn how to, so we don't lose the skills!

I finally found some magic hands, her name is Lara in no time at all we sorted out the right style for my wedding.  After my special day I went on to use Lara for special occasions, here are a couple of styles that gave me inspiration:

If you've not tried it before, I would suggest a test run before any big event - and why don't you get a couple of the girlfriends to go with you or come round whilst you are having it done - couple of glasses of bubbly and you will be ready for a night out in no time!

Let's bring back the glamour!

Lara works in the Aylesbury Vale Area - you can contact her by clicking on her name to go direct to her Facebook page.

A token gift

Token gifts for friends and distant family are a fun thing to do at Christmas; I know money is tight for everyone this year, but I heard on the news that people were taking family & friends off their Christmas gift list - I thought this is pants! The joy of giving presents to people leaves you feeling happy and with the economy all doom & gloom at the moment, we could all do with a little cheering up!

All the high street shops are doing the 3 for 2, like Boots, WH Smiths, Supermarkets etc.  But if you are looking for more than the traditional token of smellies or chocolates then I've checked out some economy token gifts that Christmas budgets may be able to spread to:

For those that like to drink tea:
I Rule mugs at £8.50
We Love British

For your friends that love to tweet:
A Twitter Year - The story of 2011 told in tweets

Bloomsbury

For your glamourous girlfriends:
Wallis has 30% off their jewellery
Earrings - Here's a great find, was £8.50, now £5.95

And for those who love their home
Debenhams offer this great hanging sign for home decor

The need for Tweed!

Tweed - I love it.

I don't know about you but I always feel the cold in winter; practical clothing never seems to be stylish!  I've found with tweed, you can now get some great designs that are not too "country" or "practical" in the sense you look like your Grandmother; yet keep warm on those cold chilly days!

One of my great finds this season has to be my Mapilton tweed jacket from Joules, it's just fabulous.  I can wear it to work over my shift dresses or black trousers.  I can wear it casually with jeans for shopping or lunch with the girls; not only is that jacket versatile, I love the detail that Joules has put into the design.

I have no idea where my jacket is made, but the attention to detail with the lining of the fabric, the unusual buttons, plus the overall quality & finish, I feel I have had a jacket tailored just for me.  With the amount  of compliments I've received from girlfriends, this has made the value of purchase so worthwhile!

Joules is a great place to shop both online or in the high street - the service can be matched to what you would get from an independent boutique.  Here are some other Joules tweed items that I may treat myself to in the new year:

Rawlyn  - Boucle Dress
£99.95

Astwick - Tweed skirt:
£74.95

Other top Tweeds:

Johnstons of Elgin
A twist on tweed collection
Tweed Mini Skirt:  £79.00

Kaleidoscope
Singh Madan Tweed Dress
£99.00

A little bit of luxury...

I love Chanel.

I would love to own Chanel clothes, handbags, watches and most definitely the fine jewellery (I wish!).

Coco Chanel inspired women to change, not only what they wore but attitudes as well.  Known for dressing very simply and having her hair short in a bob.  Coco created and designed a lot of what you and I wear today; the little black dress (there should be one in every girl's wardrobe!), wide leg trousers, she used jersey fabric in a lot of her creations and one of her best known trademarks is her costume jewellery, which today we can't live without - adding a bit on here & there.  Famous quotations from Coco include "When accessorizing always take off the last thing you put on" I frequently use that one!

I've learnt that I can have Chanel, I wear No. 5, not every day but definitely on those special occasions!  There's make up too; the nail varnishes are fabulous, and what I really love about them is that they always have 2 or 3 colours that change every season, which is a great way to keep your look updated & fresh.

Aspirational brands keeps us dreaming of a better future and it's nice to treat ourselves every now & then.  I have my little luxuries - why not treat yourself to yours!

Essential kit - Revelation Primer by House of Colour

Did you know that your foundation would look better if you use a primer first?

I discovered primer as part of my skin care regime a couple of years ago when I was shopping in London with my girlfriend Sue.   We cheekily popped into the beauty department at Liberty London to try some of their products out with no intention of buying!  The beauty girls did a great job, and we left looking & feeling fabulous. (Top tip: We also picked up a tip about smiling when applying blusher so that it goes onto the "curve" of your cheek - we both still do this today!)

Earlier this year, I had a make-up lesson by House of Colour , a gift by my hubby's mum, Carol.  It was great thing to do as I can find that I pretty much stick to the same products & colours everyday and then wonder why photos of me always look the same!  I throughly enjoyed the morning, playing with all the products and chatting to my new girlfriends that I will only come to know for those 4 hours of my life!

During this session, I was introduced to Revelation Primer, unlike some I had purchased in the past this was less of a cream but more like a gel.  I instantly liked the feel & finish it left on my face.  I purchased a pot that day.  It lasted months as you only need a little bit.  Recently due to lazyness I picked up a high street primer to replenish and was sadly disappointed with the results, so I'm going back for more!

It's a little more than your mid-price make-up items but the results are worth it.  Buy direct from  House of Colour

Essential kit – Elizabeth Arden 8 Hour Cream

I discovered this product a couple of years ago on a girls road-trip around Cornwall – I needed a fix of gloss for my lips and realised I had left my lip balm at home.   My dear friend Jen offered her 8 hour cream “just get it out of my bag” she said as she was merrily driving through the Cornish roads.  I had never heard of this cream - this then started Jen on a huge long sales spill about all the things it can do, I was so impressed I decided to buy a tube myself and started using it.

I now use this nearly everyday for all the benefits Jen had mentioned plus more.

It’s simply great.
  • You can use it on your lips to protect, smooth or add a some shine to your colour lippy!
  • I’ve found that if you get a little sunburn on your face on holiday, if you pop some on before going to bed, all the redness has gone by morning
  • It now forms part of my make-up process, especially in the summertime when you don’t want your make up to look heavy
  • For the natural look,  I add it to lips and cheeks plus I found it to be a great eyebrow fixer for those stray ones!
  • For evening, if you want to add a little shine to your colour on cheeks & eyes
  • It’s also good to use on any dry patches you come across, like on the back of your hands or elbows.
  • And strangely the product tube feels like it will last forever…….because you only need to use a little amount.

This product now goes everywhere with me, its always in my make-up bag.  As it’s a branded product, this is a great one to pick up in Duty free when you are next travelling.

Christmas shopping

We've not started Christmas shopping in our house, well we have a few bits but I keep saying to myself I have plenty of time!  Like everyone else I'm sure I'll be frantic at the last minute!  I'm usually good at the buying process but useless when it comes to wrapping them!

I probably shouldn't confess to this but every time hubby & I go Christmas shopping we come home with shopping bags full of things for us - I think we get bored with trying to find new things for people that we start to look for new things for us.

The party season has started!

Tomorrow night I'm going to be attending my second "end of year party" and it’s only the beginning of December!  I don’t even call them Christmas parties anymore, as they seem to start at end of November & carry on into the new year - I’m pretty sure that I went to dinner in February this year due to everyone’s busy diaries!

The theme of both my parties this week are all about Las Vegas with casino tables – I’m sure this is to keep the men entertained whilst the ladies are on the dance floor – what the guys didn’t bank on was me winning continuously on the roulette table, to the point I got so bored I placed all my chips on number 29 – yes I did lose (finally!) it never seems that much fun playing with monopoly money!

As this seems to be a popular theme this year, I thought I would check out some fabulous dresses giving you inspiration to get that Bond Girl glamour:

Mango have this gorgeous one shoulder black number, priced at £44.90 - add a belt for extra glam:

I found this fabulous pink number from Karen Millen, was £278.00, now £86.00 (I think this is an online offer only at: www.karenmillendressesonline.co.uk )

And for those of you with the fuller bust - Bravissimo have a range of dresses from Pepperberry -  I thought this Navy dress was bang on trend, price £69.00

To buy or not to buy?

When it comes to buying something, anything, you need to think about the value it will be to YOU.

I have a simple formula that I have been using since I was a young shopper trying to justify each of my purchases with the little money I had.  An old friend, Kay, used to laugh at me in the changing room every time she could hear me doing the maths!

My formula is "The value of the product" divided by "The amount of times you will honestly wear/use the item" - This equals the "value of your purchase".

Now I'm not saying you will be using this every time - believe me, I still have days were I've left buying the dress to the day before the do & panic bought at whatever cost the dress I think will make me look good!
But here is an example of two purchases I've made this year, and see which you think is better value:

  1. An evening dress from NEXT bought in haste for £40 - I've worn it for that occasion, and unlikely to wear it again because it didn't make me feel fantastic.  Value of purchase = £40
  2. An evening dress bought from an independent boutique with an original designer price tag of £150 that I purchased in the January sale at £110 - by the end of this year I will have worn it 4 times & likely to again next year, as I feel fabulous wearing it.  Value of purchase = £27.50

So next time you shop, that higher price tag may be better value for money?  You do the maths!

My first post!

I've finally taken the step to set up my own blog -  I have to dedicate this first post to my girlfriend Emma, who reminded me at dinner the other night, that this was suppose to be set this up at the beginning of the year to write throughout 2011!
This blog is for my girlfriends, it's about all the things I love to shop for, eat at, travel to and have fun doing, and I hope that this will provide some inspiration to get on out there & do things just for you.

Enjoy x
