Yes you can wear hats!

Only a few weeks ago I wrote about shopping for a new trilby hat, and I was a little surprised  that people felt they couldn't wear hats.  You can!

There are so many styles, materials, colours to choose from, I firmly believe there is a hat for everyone! You just need to spend some time trying on hats to find one for you.

Not sure what will suit you? Check out celebrities you like for inspiration, especially their day to day look:

Here are a few of my top tips for finding a hat:

  • Every shop you go in that sells hats - try them on.
  • Take a look at yourself in a full length mirror not one of those small oval mirrors they tend to have by the display - even if that means walking around the shop or going to the changing room to try them on - you need to see yourself properly.
  • When you try hats on in a shop - you will attract attention, accept it, listen to the comments and move on from there.
  • What's your initial reaction? - if you don't like it, you never will - so don't buy it.
  • I tend to avoid buying hats when shopping on my own, you need opinions.
  • When I wear hats, I tend to opt for contact lenses and not wear my glasses.
  • I do have hats for "bad hair days" they consist of baseball caps or my trilbies as I can put my hair up in a ponytail.  However, the best way to look good wearing a hat, is to take time on your hair, particularly for beanies - having silky smooth straight hair and wearing contact lenses, is a gorgeous feminine look.
  • And finally, I think hats are fun, so don't take it seriously!

A couple of girlfriends who love wearing hats have agreed to share their pics with you - don't they look fabulous!

Chanel Coco Noir

I love Chanel.

And so I was very excited about a launch of a new perfume, Coco Noir.

Coco Noir was launched yesterday and I headed straight to a Chanel counter to obtain both a paper spray and a sample!  Perfumes are expensive, and before leaping straight into a purchase I need to make sure that I love it.

No.5 has always been my fragrance, and a little part of me is unsure if I should try something new, especially when you find a perfume that gives you confidence, reassurance and most especially that feel good factor!

Now the paper spray at first was really over-powering, but after it settled, you get a strong sense that this is actually a powerful perfume.  I'm no perfume connoisseur, but my natural reaction to the smell tells me that this is a sexy, inviting, a tad charming but also a little delicate in some way.  I think they've got the right name, its perfect for the evening!  Girls you going to need this in your clutch bag for your next Girls night out!

Reviews are describing this perfume as "mysterious" and "a romantic take on Coco".

I plan to wear this over the next few weeks, and if I do get the right compliments, then I shall be investing in a bottle very soon!

Take a peek at Chanel's film to give you a taste of Coco Noir...

Now are you heading to a Chanel counter??

Would love to know your thoughts once you get to have a spray of it.

Thank you Chanel, even though it's not you Gabrielle who launched this, the right name has gone against the bottle!

Work Wear - I'm in the mood for dresses!

With September on the horizon, wardrobe updating normally starts with what to wear for work for the coming season.  Our lazy summer clothing will shortly not be suitable, so shopping early will help with those "don't know what to wear" moments on a Monday morning! (or if you like me, every work day morning - I wish I was like some women who plan it all the night before....not me!  Normally three changes later I'm good to go!)

I'm currently in the mood for dresses - and happily purchased this from NEXT last Saturday to get the ball rolling.

Navy Dress - NEXT

Here are some others that are inspiring me at the moment.

Military button dress - Warehouse
£38.00

Pleated dress - Oasis

Victoria Beckham - The Harper Tote Bag

And so on Facebook this week, Victoria Beckham announces that her new textured-leather tote bag, The Harper Bag, named after her daughter, is now available to purchase on Net-a-Porter.

Well if you have a spare £1,650, then get shopping here.

At first glance you would, as I did, think this to be a very expensive bag, but actually as Designer totes go, and as you will see shortly, she is not the most expensive.  I think we forget at times that she is a premium designer and has never positioned herself as a celebrity linking with a high street brand to produce affordable collections.  With all designer labels, come designer prices, just like Chanel, Dior, Vivienne Westwood and so on.  (Let's hope though that there might be a designer outlet coming soon at Bicester Village!!)

Is this bag affordable?  Well by my calculations, maybe.  Using my formula, if you buy The Harper Bag and use it 300 days out of the year, for two years, then I calculate this bag to be approx. £2.75 per day. Would you get more enjoyment using this bag for two years than spend this on a two week luxury holiday?

I've been having a look at the other totes available on the Net-a-Porter site, and here are my top five, with No.1 being The Harper Bag.

No. 1
The Harper Bag - Victoria Beckham
£1,650

No. 2
Roma - Bottega Veneta
£2,295

No. 3
Heroine - Alexander McQueen
£1,525

No. 4
Muse - Yves Saint Laurent
£1,485

No. 5
Madras - Miu Miu
£1,050

ORANGE FEVER!

This summer has continued the trend with gold, it's still very much part of our everyday look - and I've not used a clutch, such as my gold one, so much!

Chanel girls will know the rules of "keeping it simple" and "if in doubt wear black!" but with so many wonderful colours on the high street, I think this has to take a back step!

Orange compliments gold so well, and with it being my favourite colour, I just cannot get enough of it at the moment.  Orange is showing strong signals to remain for Autumn, with the latest Ad in Vogue from Giorgio Armani.

Photo taken on my iPhone

This has given me the perfect excuse to expand my accessories collection, and I've just invested in a new necklace and bangles from Chelsea Doll to match in with my summer orange dress that I purchased especially for my day in Monaco recently.

Dress from NEXT Spring 2012 / Jewellery from the Tribal Collection at Chelsea Doll

Not forgetting to add simple extras like, Chanel 617 Holiday!

Got the orange fever?

Here are a few items on the high street that I've checked out for you:

I saw this on Sunday in Debenhams, it's STAR by Julien Macdonald, I simple love this, comes in black too. £60

Victoria Beckham - Geek Chic Glam

The love of glasses continues!  Victoria Beckham is launching six styles of spectacles, in three colour-ways, as part of her new optical line.

You can read all about it here at Women's Wear Daily, they are covering the launch and Victoria is quoted saying “I do need to wear glasses — [but] I haven’t found glasses that suit me or that I particularly like,” Beckham told WWD. “I’ve always been quite self-conscious [about this], so that’s why I’ve decided to do them myself.”

I believe, it' really important for women to feel good about themselves and if this new product line encourages young girls that need to wear glasses to do so, then this is a positive move by Victoria.

I found this next quote funny, but there you go, vanity before sanity I suppose!

“I will be wearing my glasses now, and it will be nice to see where I will be going for once,” Beckham said.

Her range will not be affordable as they are handcrafted in Italy, but it won't be long before her look is copied...

What do you think about Victoria getting on board with geek chic?

Women - In life, in business and in style!

My name is Rachel Hughes, I'm 29 years old and I own and manage Chelsea Doll, the online fashion jewellery store which is based just outside Cardiff.

How did you get to where you are today?
My background is very much business-oriented.  I knew from a young age that I wanted to run my own business.  I graduated from uni with a Business Studies degree and started my first business at the tender age of 20!  I've always had a 'passion for fashion', so merging the two was inevitable at some stage.

What made you start up Chelsea Doll?
Originally, as a co-owner of a computer-repair and web design business I was getting increasingly bored of mundane IT stuff so decided to take the plunge and start a business doing something I love and enjoy.  I think that's half the battle in business - if you find something you like doing day in, day out, it makes it much easier to make a go of things.

How did you go about it?
I started with a detailed business plan (a must for any start-up), something which I knew I could go back to year after year to monitor my progress.  I did most of my research online and scouted around for suppliers of unique, quirky fashion jewellery.  I realised that there was a big enough gap in the market for an on-trend fashion jewellery website.  The planning phase took four months and the actual design of the website took about a month.  Once the website was up and running (after a lot of midnight oil burning!) it went from there really.

What challenges did you face & how did you overcome them?
In the beginning I faced a huge challenge in that, although I'd run a small business for the six years before, I had absolutely no experience in retail, and in particular, managing an online store. I've learnt the way of things as time has gone on but it's been a very sharp learning curve!

Buying was a huge bugbear - in the beginning I had a tendency to overspend, buying pieces that I liked without giving any thought to how popular they'd be on the website.  I had to get out of the mindset that ordering stock was not a personal shopping spree! Inventory-management was a bit of a nightmare to start with but we've recently installed a stock control program to take care of things.

What do you love most about running your own business?
Ah, absolutely everything!  I couldn't think of anything I'd rather be doing.  I know it's a cliché but I actually really love my job!  I'm a bit of a workaholic so the late nights slaving away on my laptop don't put me off.  There is a huge responsibility involved with running your own business, after all the buck stops with me but I love being master of my own destiny and making decisions.  Another advantage is that if I'm having a really bad day I can retreat to my house and work at my own pace.

How do you achieve work/life balance?
I have to admit defeat here and say that it's something I haven't really mastered.  I tend to blur the lines A LOT.  I'm constantly on my phone and whether I'm out with friends or at home watching television I always know what's going on within the business, which makes it very difficult to switch off and forget about work.  I think I'm starting to make progress though - I am learning to allocate start and finish times for the day and block time out for myself.

What's your favourite thing to do to relax from work?
Probably go out for dinner and drinks with family and friends (preferably with lots of cocktails!).  I really enjoy going away with my husband but don't do it as often as I'd like.

Where is your favourite location to shop?
My go-to shop is definitely Topshop, especially if I'm looking for a complete outfit (excluding accessories, of course!).  I love discovering new, smaller online boutiques for unique pieces.  I've recently come across 18 and East, Lavish Alice and Yayer.

If you had to pick one item from Chelsea Doll this season, which one would it be?
I'm a little in love with the Kai Neon Choker Necklace, although I haven't had chance to wear it yet.  It's VERY bright and 1990s-inspired so it needs to be worn with the right outfit!

What three things could you not live without?

  1. The first one is easy, my Blackberry - I'm not sure how long I'd last without it!
  2. Max Factor Colour Adapt Foundation - I probably have the worst skin imaginable so count this as one of my best friends!
  3. Diet Coke - A naughty one as I probably drink way too much of it, but Diet Coke is always my drink of choice.

Shady days: Trilby Hat

I've always loved hats, and I'm a lucky girl as most styles suit me.  One of the best ways to keep the sun off your face and protect it, is simply wearing a hat.

On days trips out in the summer, I'm rarely seen without a hat and I thought I would check out a few new trilby styles to update my look.  If you've not tried a hat, why not give one a go - start by wearing it in the garden until you have the confidence to go out & about!

They are great fun, stylish and they protect you from the sun - all good stuff!
